Shopping 12.9.17 + checking receipts

Fear not! The bread week recipe is coming today, I promise. But first: shopping recap! Nipped to Boyes as it is the only place locally that does Astonish washing up liquid. Finding vegan washing up liquid on a budget is a right pain, and I don’t know if the Aldi one is vegan (it is ‘Cruelty Free’ though) so we grabbed some Astonish. I love the smell but it’s not the most effective cleaner in the world. It’ll do though! The other unusual purchase today was gram flour. Liv bought this to make vegan omelettes and also to try the ‘chickpea tofu’ video that has been making the rounds. What we didn’t spot until we got home though, was that we actually bought gram flour that is 80% yellow split peas (?!) and only 20% chickpeas. We shall see what happens with that! Aldi annoyingly had no chickpeas in – the shelf was just spread out more as if they never existed. Tesco chickpeas are more expensive but we managed to find a brand on offer 4 for £1 so in the end we saved money. Lots of beans this week. Beans, beans, good for the heart…

Liv wanted me to add a note this week about checking receipts. I’ve always done this, and it’s a habit I picked up from shopping with my mum, but sometimes Liv likes to just throw them straight in the bin. I’m glad she’s slowly learning though – last week she spotted that our reduced bread had gone through at full price! It might only be pennies but they add up, so always check you’ve been charged correctly.

Additionally, always check whether there is a survey you can take. This will usually be stated at the bottom of the receipt. They are worth doing, because they only take a few minutes and you have the chance to win prizes. The Tesco one also gives you a few free clubcard points each month! I also like to use them to say what items are regularly out of stock, or what items I would like to see stocked. Individually  my comments may mean nothing, but over time they may lead to some improvement of the local stores.

What tips have you got to make shopping cheaper?

Happy Friday,

B x
